Valencia, our beautiful city known for its beautiful beaches, historic architecture, and sunny weather, recently faced a tragic natural disaster that has left parts of the region shattered and mourning.
While Valencia City itself was largely spared, the surrounding areas were not as fortunate, with heavy floods causing destruction, and loss of life, and is a stark reminder of the forces of nature. It’s taken me a while to gather my thoughts and articulate them. We know people who were affected by this and it just feels like a bad dream.
What is DANA, or Gota Fría?
The recent floods in Valencia were a result of DANA, which stands for Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos (Isolated Depression at High Levels). It’s commonly referred to as Gota Fría. This weather phenomenon occurs when cold polar air collides with warm Mediterranean air, causing intense storms and heavy rainfall over short periods.
Unfortunately, this year’s DANA brought devastation to the Valencia region, causing unprecedented flooding in several areas and pushing local resources to the limit. Some places got a year’s worth of rain in just a few hours.
How Valencia City Was Spared:
For those who live in the city of Valencia itself, the news felt surreal, as the city received only a minimal amount of rain compared to the heavy downpour in surrounding areas. This relative safety is due in part to the diversion of the Turia River, which once ran through Valencia but was rerouted after a catastrophic flood in 1957.
In the wake of that disaster, city officials decided to divert the river southward, transforming the old riverbed into what is now the Turia Gardens, a stunning, 9-kilometer-long park filled with walking paths, gardens, and sports facilities. This foresight has allowed Valencia City to remain largely unaffected by the flooding this year. Unfortunately, the places close to where the river was diverted were crushed.
The Extent of the Devastation and Lives Lost:
While Valencia City was lucky, the same cannot be said for nearby areas, where heavy rain led to severe flooding, destruction of property, and heartbreaking loss of life, more than 207 at the time of this post.
Homes have been destroyed, roads have been submerged, cars are piled on the roads and entire neighborhoods are still grappling with the impact. The government and local organizations are doing everything they can to provide support, but the sheer scale of the devastation is overwhelming and will take time.
How You Can Help Valencia and the devastating Dana event:
Many people have been asking how they can help, and there are several ways to make a difference. Here are some of the most impactful methods. I have mentioned them on my Facebook page but know that not everyone is on that platform, so I am mentioning them here again. These are the organizations we have donated to but there are many more that are worthy:
- Monetary Donations: Many local charities and relief organizations are accepting donations to provide food, shelter, and essentials to affected families. AgeinSpain has set up a GoFundme for the victims. They are a national charity in Spain dedicated to the welfare of English-speaking older people. Find their fund page here. We can not forget the animals and a rescue group dearest to our hearts is the DARNA Animal Rescue. They are a small group of volunteers who work tirelessly and could use all the help they can get. As you know, we had two very much beloved dogs who have since passed and we continue to support their work whenever we can.
- Blood Donations: With injuries widespread, hospitals need extra blood supplies. If you’re able to, donating blood is a direct way to assist those who are suffering. Cruz Roja is the Spain Red Cross and you can donate blood or money. Donate here:
- Cleaning Supplies and Other Essentials: Basic cleaning supplies are crucial for those who are returning to waterlogged homes and need to begin the cleanup process. Some local collection points are accepting donations of these items. Cleaning supplies are really hard to come by now due to the generosity of the people.
What to Expect When Visiting Valencia Soon:
For those planning to visit Valencia soon, be prepared for a city that is still healing. While Valencia’s vibrant character is resilient, the recent events have undoubtedly left their mark.
Some public transport systems, especially the metro lines, have been heavily impacted and are undergoing repairs. The buses are still running, though not as frequently, so it’s best to plan extra time if you’re relying on public transit. Driving in certain areas is discouraged to allow emergency vehicles priority access. Within the city center, it is easy to walk or bike everywhere and as I said previously, the city hasn’t been affected.
There are two schools of thought when it comes to whether to visit or not. Some argue that holidays should be postponed as they are insensitive while others think this is another great way to support the city. There are a lot of businesses such as restaurants that need the tourist money especially now. Do what is best for you. I know how hard it is to change reservations, etc without paying through the nose.
A Community That Steps Up
One of the most inspiring aspects of this tragic event has been the way the community has come together. Even in areas where official aid has yet to reach, locals have organized themselves to provide shelter, food, and assistance to those in need. This spirit of community and support is one of the things that make Valencia such a special place to live.
Looking Ahead: Is It Safe to Move Here?
You might have read some of my past posts on the city. If you’ve been planning a move to Valencia, know that Valencia City remains safe and livable. However, if you were planning to settle in the outskirts or near the river outlet areas, it’s worth taking some extra time to research and confirm the state of these locations. Although it’s impossible to predict the future, staying informed and aware of the layout and infrastructure can make a big difference.
Resilience and Remembrance
As we mourn those lost to this disaster, let’s also remember the strength of this incredible city and its people. Valencia’s resilience in the face of tragedy is true proof of the character of its residents. Through continued support, both locally and internationally, Valencia will rebuild and recover.
